It's a jungle out there!

SPECS: AV Mode, ISO 100, SS 1/320, f/3.5, 50mm lens

I present to you Gladys Porter Zoo. I believe this is the only zoo south of San Antonio TX. Having a membership is surely helpful since most of the kids from all over Rio Grande Valley end up coming down here for field trips and more. Plus you can't beat the picture opportunities. Anyway, today was a cloudy day so we went to the zoo with all my camera gear. You should've seen me, backpack with all 4 lenses, tripod, flash, etc. Must say that the tripod is horrible (my dh said "what do you expect for a Wal-Mart tripod?"). Guess he's right. I've already added a Manfrotto to my "wishlist" at B&H. Anyway, hardly any people at the zoo so I took quite a bit of time with next weeks water shoots (I got 3 btw). I tried to get some animals but I don't have all the skills to get razor sharp images just yet. Anyway, here's the best I could come up with.

Please let me have HHCC as I really need help trying to get these shots.

TFL!

Those are terrific animal shots! I especially like the one of the giraffe. It looks so soft and cuddly. Great job!

The zoo sounds fabulous. Greta photo opportunities. the first three are a bit soft, the Peacock is sharper though. i noticed it has a faster SS, maybe that's the difference even though the others were tripod mounted???

Oh how I love animal shots! I have that same WalMart tripod, it is a bit difficult to manuver, but does ok in a pinch. That "yawn" is fantastic...one of those moments you dream of when taking photos. I think it's obvious you took your time to set everything up, these are very good and hey...I didn't even notice they were not "razor sharp" in your words...just loved the captures!

I especially love the giraffe. I'm not sure how to help on the sharp factor, other than maybe if you bring up your shutter speed? The lion pic had an ISO of 100...your ss was 1/20. Maybe bump to 200?

These are nice. I want to go to our zoo to do the same thing this spring. I notice you used your 50mm lens. Maybe something stronger would give it more pop.Did you end up cropping a bunch and enlarging? I think a different angle on the giraffe would make it pop more. Right now it seems to blend a little with the background. Great pictures-I can't wait to do this myself.

These are great shots!!...sounds like you had quite the gear with you but it looks like it all payed off!! I too didn't notice that these weren't 'razor sharp' - they look fabulous to me!! i love the photos of the yawn and the giraffe!!

Running USM on the pictures can help with sharpness. I've been applying it to some of my photos (but not really sure of what i'm doing!!). Let me know if you want to know some of the setting some peas have suggested to me...

these are so good,

my only cc is the second one (of the lioness) seems just a bit too bright, but they be my lousy monitor. the others look spot on.

the giraffe is awesome.
