Today I shot some pics at the school's pep-rally, however, I didn't have any time to download them or PP them at home so I'm posting some from a shoot I did for my dear "comadre."
I present to you my "Ahijado"[pronounced-aeehado]...(Godson). He is Mr. Athlete if you ask me. My girls love having him over to play and I think he enjoys it too.

I shot this in my kitchen with a black background from a kit I had purchased @ ebay. For the lighting I used my AB's 400's. This was my 2nd time using the Alien Bees lights and I wasn't too sure how much or how high (power wise) to have them. Lately, I haven't tried to shoot with them so I can't tell for sure if I've progressed either. I think that in some I underexposed but heck, I'll get the hang of it...I think...
Another problem I had was that he was sitting on the floor, not a problem for me because I could be on my knees or a little chair, the problem was how to position the lights to go that low...hmmm...maybe I should have brought them down (I kept them at about 5 ft high but pointing down with an umbrella). And sometimes I just turned the right side off and I think you can tell in the last picture.
Also, I didn't know whether to use the black umbrella or the silver lining one...so I used both, one on each side...the power being less on one side. Since this was shot at night, I thought the background would be OK...not so...I had to clone out every little single speck of white stuff, because believe me, EVERYTHING shows up...dang it...that was quite a bit of cloning...
And then there's the fact that his head blends with the background...how do I fix that? I tried levels, and curves, but I'm not too good at them either so I just left it alone. I did, however, ran a "glambur" action on all pictures along with a crop. The "glambur" has a USM embedded in it so I think that was it.
PLEASE HHCC all the pictures!!! I really need it!
SPECS: Manual Mode, 18-55mm lens, SS 1/250, AV f/11, ISO 100, AB's 400's with 2 umbrellas @ 5ft (height) on left and right (I think they were at 3/4 (silver umbrella) and 1/4 power (black umbrella) )
BTW, my comadre was happy with them (though I wasn't) and so that was that. It's not like I was selling them or anything...they were my willing subjects/models (I just hope they continue to be as willing next time I need them ...).
TFL!

I don't use studio lights, so I am absolutely no help there, just thought I'd offer advice as to what I'm seeing. I think his hair and black shorts/shoes get lost too much in the background. I've seen questions posted on 2peas about this before, and the response had something to do with a hair light (correct me if I'm waaaay wrong!). I think your composition and angles are great; skin tone looks perfect; and I really like them! Maybe just work on getting the blacks separated from the background. :)
What a cutie! The first one is a really nice shot, but I think there is too much of a shadow on one side of his face... Maybe you could try him on a white background? or lighter color? If you don't have a hairlight--whatever that is... :) (I have read something about hairlights, too. just have no idea what they are!) Anyway, great job!
cute pics. my comment would have been the same about the darkness on his face. Did you try dodging the highlights around that area? that might help. I don't know anything about lights so can't help ya there :)
Guess what? You've been tagged.
Check out my blog for information.
I think these are wonderful, he's adorable. I have never used studio lighting, no help.
I have never used studio lights so can't make any CC on that. But I love the composition of these pictures and the skin tone. Like others mentioned try to seperate the blacks to they stick out more. Maybe like Jan suggested - white background so they stick out and hopefully get rid of the shadowing on his face. TFS!
LOL, you've got the newbies of light here! I'm not expert either, but I have done a little research on the topic~
Okay, here's my understanding. A hair light is a light over your subject, lighting the top of their head. You could also try lighting your backdrop to separate your subject (who is adorable, by the way) even more. that light would be behind him, directed on to your backdrop.
If you only have two lights, I would try one side light, and the other both as a hair light, and then as lighting your backdrop. I think with the black on black, a hair light is going to work better, but I'm not positive.
You did great!
Your focus is good. Your color is off on the second one- on my screen, he has an orange cast.
Really, I love these. I like the shadowy, deep portrait. These are really, really close to perfect!
I can't offer any CC on these - I'm a bit of a rookie. Personally (I may be nuts) I find that the shadowing/lighting brings more interest to the photos and looks more artistic. That's just me! lol
I know nothing about using studio lighting or umbrellas, but I think these are a little dark. With his dark hair, dark shorts, and dark complexion he gets lost. So, no cc...just my 2 cents. :) He is absolutely adorable though!!
These are nice pictures, but I think they are too dark..
Even though there is some shadow on one side of his face, I think they are great shots. I dont know how but I know there is a way to seperate the hairline from the actual picture. That would help but I really like them anyway. They just look so sweet. He is very cute!!
These are spectacular. Love that the background is Black.
